What did Tom Cruise do to his teeth?

Your mom’s favorite action man, Tom Cruise, has been a household name since the mid-80s.

Starring in today’s classics - like Top Gun which was revisited in 2022 for a part 2 - he holds the reins when it comes to franchise films.

Known for being quite the looker (according to most women over 40), has he always been the heartthrob we know today, or has Cruise needed some help in the smile department?

Keep reading for more information, in the Tom Cruise edition of our celebrity smile series.

The difference in Cruise’s smile is Knight And Day

When Tom Cruise set to embark on his Hollywood success, he didn’t exactly have an A-lister smile.

Featuring misalignment, chips, a missing tooth, and a pronounced overbite, it’s said that his smile was damaged as a result of a sporting injury - hockey pucks can cause Collateral damage when they want to.

But this didn’t stop this maverick.

Braces were his wingman

To straighten out a few teeth, Cruise opted for invisible braces with ceramic brackets around 2001-2002.

While it fixed a few wonky teeth, he still had one front tooth larger than the other - a feature that he’s now recognized and praised for keeping.

It’s pretty uncommon for celebs to get the traditional braces we know and love, due to the effect it has on their appearance. Barely-there braces are perfect if you want to straighten out some teeth, without adding too much bulk, allowing you to sneakily achieve a perfect smile - without the restrictions brackets and wires bring.

Crowns helped him get ready for takeoff

Braces seemed to do the trick, but the more roles Tom landed, the more he did to his teeth.

To hide a few stubborn imperfections, and achieve a more symmetrical smile, it seems like the Jerry Maguire star had crowns or veneers. Veneers are adhered to the front surface of the tooth, whereas crowns cover the entire surface, and require slightly more preparation to ensure a lasting look.

We’ve seen this a lot in our celebrity teeth transformations, with actors and singers undergoing these cosmetic treatments to make sure they’re always camera-ready.

Dental appointments are a Cruise for this star

After undergoing a few beautifying dental procedures, not much has changed in Tom’s smile…and why would it?

His Hollywood gleam is still going strong - perfect for accepting awards or walking the red carpet.

While he still has some misalignment on his top front teeth, he doesn’t seem to be in any rush to correct it. With one being larger and more exposed than the other, it gives the actor some individuality and a quirky edge.
